Our day sale of Arts of the Islamic World will take place on 5 October, and includes a variety of pieces encompassing the full breadth of Muslim artistic production. A number of items are particularly noteworthy, revealing the fascinating relationship between the Islamic world and the West. Some pieces were made in Europe specifically for the Islamic market, whilst others are greatly influenced by Islamic stylistic traditions. A statuesque monumental stone lion, for example, originates from the Taifa Kingdom of Badajoz in 11th-century Spain, and an extremely rare and important Romanesque bronze aquamanile, produced in medieval Germany, takes the shape of the earlier mythical senmurv, a composite animal of Persian origin.
